Not Particularly Normal

Posted on

The thing that sets us apart from “normal” human beings is our ability to read the ocean and make judgements based on those assessments. It is not an insult to think of a sailor as not normal, it is a compliment. We read clouds like translating a classical adventure novel, interpreting them into something that is magical. The weather is a key component in sailing and we are much more in tune with the weather than a “normal” person. The sea has many currents and idiosyncrasies that most don't understand. As sailors, we read the ocean like a map and make judgements based on those calculations, something that “normal” people cannot do. We look through performance sunglasses at approaching land and are able to discern the patterns along the shore; nothing “normal” about that.

Exceptional

It can be said that sailors are not “normal” but exceptional. Exceptional enough to conquer the raging beast of the ocean. Safety is an illusion on the sea. The best of us have all of the preparation covered and that is good enough most of the time. When it isn’t the sea can be a vicious adversary, taking what it wants and reminding us of its power. It is as much a wilderness as the Alaskan backcountry, the Sahara desert and the swamps of the Amazon.

At Ocean Racing we make the finest sailing sunglasses for those who are not “normal” but those who are “exceptional”. Please visit our storefront and get on board with the last pair of sunglasses you will ever need.
